The CFPO credential

What CFPO certifies
The authorization sequence for care paid by a federal program: who approves what, in what order, under which contractor, and what documentation has to travel alongside.
Federal payer operations is not medical coding and it is not commercial billing. A coder decides what was done; a biller decides how to ask for payment. The person CFPO certifies decides — before either of them — whether the care is authorized at all, by whom, for how long, and what has to be on file for the claim to survive contact with the payer. When that work is done well, the Veteran or military family never sees a bill and the practice is paid the first time. When it is done badly, the denial usually arrives months later and names a cause that is not the real one.

Federal payer operations is defined by the authorization sequence, not by the code or the claim form.
Held by the individual
CFPO attaches to a person, not an employer. It travels between organizations and can be verified by anyone, without the holder's involvement.
Stacks, does not replace
CFPO assumes nothing about coding credentials and conflicts with none of them. Many holders will carry both.
Who holds it
CFPO is written for the people who already do this work, whatever their title:
- Referral and prior-authorization coordinators in practices that see Veterans and military families
- Provider enrollment and credentialing specialists who onboard practices to VA community care and TRICARE
- Intake and front-office leads who decide, at scheduling, which program governs the visit
- Billing, denial-management and appeals staff who work federal claims
- Community care coordinators and practice managers accountable for federal payer performance
- Independent operations professionals who provide these services to practices under contract

None of these is required to sit the CFPO examination and none confers an exemption. Candidates who hold one and also meet the experience pathway may find the examination shorter work, but the standard is the same for everyone.
What it asserts, and what it does not
A CFPO credential asserts that, on the date of the examination, the holder met a published standard measured by a proctored examination, and that the holder has agreed to a code of ethics under which the credential can be suspended or revoked.
It is not a government license, not a state or federal accreditation, and not an endorsement by the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense, or any of their contractors. It confers no authority to practice, bill, or represent anyone before a federal program, and it guarantees no employment outcome. Anyone telling you a credential unlocks a legal capability in this field is misinforming you.
