Eligibility

CIFPO sets the eligibility standard. Candidates may prepare through any provider, an employer program, or self-study. What CIFPO checks is whether one of the two pathways below is met and evidenced.

Pathway A · Experience

Twelve months of documented work

Twelve months of verifiable, paid experience in provider enrollment, credentialing, prior authorization, or claims and appeals work touching at least one federal payer program. The months need not be consecutive, and part-time work counts on a pro-rated basis (a minimum of 1,000 hours across the period).

Accepted evidence

An attestation from a supervisor or employer on the CIFPO attestation form
An attestation from a contracting party, for work performed under contract
The candidate's own business records if self-employed — engagement agreements, invoices or payer correspondence, with client and patient details redacted

Pathway B · Preparation

Completion of a qualifying program

Documented completion of a preparation program covering all six published content domains, with a minimum of 40 instructional hours. Programs are evaluated against the content outline, not against the provider. CIFPO does not require, and does not sell, any course.

Accepted evidence

A completion record naming the program, the provider, the dates and the instructional hours
A program syllabus or outline showing coverage of all six domains, if the program is not already on file with CIFPO

What is not required

An active credential from another body — AAPC, AHIMA, NHA, NAMSS or HFMA — is not required and confers no exemption. A degree is not required. Membership in any organization is not required.

Disclosure. DutyPath Academy, operated by DutyPath LLC, offers a Pathway B program. DutyPath LLC and CIFPO share a founder; the relationship is described on the governance page. Completing that program earns no advantage in eligibility review or on the examination, and its tuition does not include the examination fee, which every candidate pays to CIFPO directly.

How eligibility is reviewed

Select a pathway on the application and attach the evidence listed above.
CIFPO reviews applications within 10 business days of receipt of the fee and evidence.
If eligibility cannot be established from what was submitted, CIFPO tells the candidate precisely what is missing rather than decline. A candidate has 60 days to supply it.
On approval, the candidate receives an authorization-to-test valid for 90 days and dated to span at least one full testing window.

A material false statement on an application is grounds for denial and, if discovered later, for revocation of the credential and a bar from re-applying for three years.

Not eligible yet?

Most candidates who are not yet eligible are short on documented months, not on knowledge. Keep the records that will evidence the work — engagement letters, dated payer correspondence, role descriptions — and apply when the twelve months are in hand. There is no fee to ask CIFPO, before applying, whether particular evidence will satisfy Pathway A.
